Introduction: Exploring Minority Groups

This blog aims to shed some light to the controversial issue of the so-called minority groups The United Nations Minorities Declaration was adopted in 1992 with the goal of promoting and protecting the rights of people belonging to minority groups, whether they are based on national, ethnic, religious, or linguistic factors. The idea is that this will help to promote political and social stability in the countries where these groups live. Virtually all countries in the world have minorities within their populations Minority groups encompass a diverse range of individuals who, due to various factors, find themselves in positions of lesser power or representation within society. These groups include those affected by mental health issues, ethnic communities, women in politics, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Under international law, minorities are recognized based on both objective factors, such as shared ethnicity, language, or religion, and subjective factors, where individuals identify th...

Ethnic Groups

One of the reasons why nowadays the world is a place with a lot of social diversity is due to the so-called ethnic groups . These are social categories which share a common language, culture, religion, ethnicity, etc. With all these sharing characteristics, they create a sense of community and identity that may differ from other groups. It is also important to differentiate two terms that can cause problems when talking about this topic: ethnicity and race. The main difference between both terms is that when we talk about race, we are referring to the physical appearance of the people, and when we do it about ethnicity, it is referring to its cultural traits. So, we may refer to a person as “black” or “white” to relate him/her to the race, and we may refer to a person as “African American”, “Asian”, etc. to refer to ethnicity. There are a lot of types of ethnic groups due to the big quantity of characteristics that can be shared by people. They can shape traditions, nationalities, music...

Groups affected by Mental Health Issues

As acknowledged by the authoritative definition provided by the World Health Organization , "mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development" Moreover, according to this international organization, "[about] 13% of the global population is living with mental disorders, [including] a range of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others" . In concordance with other recent researches, the WHO article highlights several causes triggering this phenomenon: apart from the traditional attri...

Women in Politics

Women in Politics Although women constitute nearly half of the global population, their representation in politics remains largely symbolic. It can be concluded that the role of women in global politics is limited and underrepresented. According to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, in one of the most significant electoral periods in recent history, 107 countries have yet to elect a female head of state. In 2024, women represented only 27% of members of national parliaments and 35.5% of members of local governments. This stark disparity highlights the ongoing challenges women face in achieving political representation. Several factors contribute to the underrepresentation of women in politics. Economic barriers are a significant challenge, as women often face difficulties in financing their political campaigns, which limits their ability to compete on equal footing with men. Campaigns require substantial financial resources, and women...

LGTBQ+ Collectives

The LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and other gender identities and sexual orientations) represents a rich human diversity that has been present throughout history, although it has not always been recognized or accepted. In recent years, the LGBTQ+ movement has gained visibility, rights and support, but it also continues to face significant challenges in different parts of the world. To speak of the LGBTQ+ community is to speak of identity, love, struggle and dignity. Each letter of this acronym represents a unique experience. Lesbians and gays have fought for decades for the right to love freely. Bisexual people challenge the stereotypes of a binary sexuality, while transgender people face one of the harshest realities of discrimination and violence. The term “queer,” once an insult, has been reclaimed as an expression of pride for those who are uncomfortable with traditional labels.  One of the most important aspects of advancing LGBTQ+ rights ...
